WizMenu is a web-based QR menu management platform for restaurants.

The product consisted of three connected components:

  • a management dashboard for restaurant owners and staff;
  • a customer-facing QR menu;
  • a mobile application for waiters, used to receive and manage incoming orders.

I joined the project at an early stage and worked closely with stakeholders and restaurant owners throughout the design process. The goal was to create a system that would simplify menu management while fitting naturally into existing restaurant workflows.

Understanding restaurant workflows

Before starting the design phase, I conducted interviews with potential users, primarily owners of small local cafés and restaurants.

The goal was to understand:

  • how menus were created and maintained;
  • how orders were handled internally;
  • how communication between staff members worked;
  • which parts of the process created the most friction.

The research resulted in a set of personas, user stories, and a clearer understanding of operational challenges faced by small businesses.

Information architecture & wireframes

To better understand the market, I analyzed existing QR menu and restaurant management solutions.

The focus was on:

  • feature sets;
  • onboarding flows;
  • navigation patterns;
  • menu customization capabilities;
  • staff management workflows.

This helped identify both industry standards and opportunities to improve usability.

To establish the overall architecture, I used card sorting exercises to validate navigation and feature grouping before moving into detailed design.

Wireframes and architecture

Design of the customer-facing QR menu was initially assigned to another designer while I focused on the operational side of the system.

Working on both products in parallel helped define how orders, menu updates, and restaurant operations would flow across the entire ecosystem.

Building the design system

Once the visual direction was approved, I translated it into a design system that became the foundation for all three products.

The system included:

  • typography and color foundations;
  • reusable UI components;
  • spacing and layout rules;
  • patterns shared across the dashboard, menu, and waiter application.

Since the platform was expected to grow significantly over time, consistency and scalability became key priorities from the beginning.

Designing the restaurant management experience

With this foundation in place, I designed the management platform used by restaurant owners and staff to manage menus, categories, restaurant settings, and incoming orders.

Designing the waiter app

The waiter application was designed in parallel with the management platform to ensure that both products worked seamlessly together.

Early discussions with restaurant owners revealed that most waiters at pilot locations used iPhones. Since the application's primary purpose was receiving and managing incoming orders, speed and familiarity became more important than creating a unique visual identity.

To reduce onboarding time and development complexity, the interface was built around native iOS patterns and interactions.

Rethinking the menu system

The customer-facing menu was initially designed by another designer while I focused on the management platform and waiter application.

As development progressed, it became clear that the original approach would be difficult to scale. One of the platform's key features was menu customization, but the design relied on numerous custom visual treatments that couldn't be easily controlled through a simple set of settings.

My task was to redesign the menu around a more structured system that allowed restaurants to create visually distinct menus by adjusting only a handful of variables such as colors, typography, and component styles.
